A tricycle or trike as they are often called is a vehicle that has three wheels and can be powered by pedaling or by a motor.

 

Tricycles or trikes have become more popular over the last couple of years in many areas, not only for children but adults alike. In America they are a popular means of transport for the elderly and in many Asian countries, tricycles are used as taxis.

 

They are also becoming more popular as a mean of getting your children to school. Many of the modern tricycles for adults come with two child seats and are a safer way to take you children too and from school than separate bicycles.

Types of Tricycles

 

There are 3 main types of pedal powers tricycles or trikes and they consist of:

 

Upright tricycles – a traditional looking tricycles with a layout similar to a bicycle.

 

Delta tricycles – is a far more speed orientated machine and the rider sits in a lower position or as it’s better known as a recumbent position. Because these tricycles are lower and better aerodynamically they can reach speeds great than bicycles.

 

Tadpole Tricycles – the tadpole is similar in rider position to the delta but the main difference being that the two wheel are at the front of the tricycle instead of the rear.

Motorized Tricycles or Trikes

 

As well as pedal powered tricycles or trikes you can also get motorized tricycles. These are better known as motorized trikes and are very popular in the US with groups who like to tour long distances and carry lots of equipment.
